The Descent Begins: What Makes Scorpio Season 2026 Extraordinary

The Sun enters Scorpio on October 23 at 5:37 AM Eastern. It does not descend alone.

Venus has been walking backward through Scorpio since October 3. Mercury stations retrograde on October 24 at 20° Scorpio. Both inner planets, retrograde, in the same sign, at the very threshold of the season's opening. Venus retrograde occurs only once every eighteen months; having both inner planets retrograde in Scorpio together at the Sun's ingress is a once-in-years alignment.

And then there is the Venus Cazimi. On October 23 and 24, the Sun conjoins retrograde Venus at 0°45' Scorpio. Venus purified in the heart of the Sun, in the sign of death and transformation. Desire, values, self-worth: all of it burned clean at the very threshold.

This is not a season to push forward. It is a season to descend, willingly, consciously, with a torch in hand.

Persephone did not choose the dark. She was taken there. And yet she became its queen.

The Mythic Pantheon of the Sacred Dark

Three goddesses preside over this season, each from a different tradition, each ruling a different face of the sacred dark. Together they form a unified mythic framework for the descent ahead.

Persephone and the Shattering Descent

The ancient Greeks had a word for it: catabasis, meaning "shattering descent." Persephone's abduction by Hades is not merely a myth of loss. It is the archetype of uninvited transformation, the moment when the ground opens and the life you knew falls away.

The Eleusinian Mysteries, ancient Greece's most sacred rites, reenacted her descent each autumn during the month of Boedromion. Initiates were guided through symbolic death and rebirth in darkness so complete that no written account of the inner rituals has survived. This was the original Scorpio Season ritual: a willingness to enter the unknown and trust that something essential waited on the other side.

Hecate, Torchbearer at the Crossroads

Hecate was the only witness to Persephone's abduction. She carried torches into the Underworld, guided Persephone both in and out, and stood at every crossroads where three roads met. Her sacred symbols (torches, keys, dogs, the triple moon) mark her as the ultimate goddess of liminal thresholds. She does not light the way back. She lights the way through.

As a triple goddess, she ruled all three realms: in heaven she was Selene the moon, on earth Artemis the huntress, and in the underworld she became Persephone herself. Three faces that mirror Scorpio Season's own triple arc of descent, shadow encounter, and return.

Serket, Guardian of the Threshold

From Egypt comes a different kind of protector. Serket, the scorpion goddess, is depicted as a woman with a scorpion upon her crown, holding the ankh in one hand and the was-sceptre in the other: life and power, carried at the boundary between the living and the dead. She is not a goddess of fear. She is fierce, liminal guardianship made flesh.

Persephone shows us how to descend. Hecate shows us how to navigate the dark. And Serket reminds us that we are protected at the threshold.

The Transit Map: Key Astrological Dates to Hold

Think of this not as a transit list but as a ritual calendar, a map of the season's emotional and spiritual terrain. Mark these dates. Let them orient you.

  • October 23: Sun enters Scorpio conjunct retrograde Venus (Venus Cazimi at 0°45' Scorpio). The season's threshold moment. Values and identity enter the fire.
  • October 24: Mercury stations retrograde at 20° Scorpio. The mind turns inward. Communication, contracts, and psychological patterns come under review until November 13.
  • October 26: Full Moon in Taurus (Hunter's Moon) at 12:11 AM. The Scorpio-Taurus axis activates. What we carry in the body (Taurus) confronts what must be transformed (Scorpio). This is the ancestral embodiment axis: inherited patterns made visible in flesh and bone.
  • October 31 – November 1: Samhain. The ancient Celtic New Year. The Celts believed the veil between the living and the spirit world was thinnest at this turning, and this year it falls squarely inside the double Mercury-Venus retrograde window. This may be the most potent ancestor communication portal in years.
  • November 9: New Moon in Scorpio at 16° Scorpio, 2:02 AM Eastern. The emotional reset and seed-planting point of the season. Both retrogrades are still active. Plant your intentions in the dark.
  • November 13: Mercury and Venus both station direct on the same day. A rare collective turning point, from deep introspection to clarity and forward motion. The descent begins its return.
  • November 16: Mars meets Jupiter in Leo. A burst of momentum and courage after weeks of inward review. The season shifts from descent to re-emergence.

Beneath all of this, Pluto in Aquarius (retrograde through October 13, then direct) forms an ongoing square to Scorpio, amplifying themes of hidden power and collective transformation throughout the entire season.

Shadow Work: The Sacred Practice of This Season

Shadow work is no longer fringe. Search interest has grown over 400% in recent years, and the hashtag has amassed over 2.3 billion views on TikTok as of 2026. It is one of the defining spiritual practices of this year, appearing alongside somatic healing and sleep retreats in major wellness forecasts.

But what is the shadow, really? It is not the enemy. It is the unlit room inside you, the place where your unlived life, your inherited wounds, and your disowned power have been waiting. Not hiding. Waiting.

The double retrograde offers a precise framework for this work. Mercury retrograde in Scorpio asks you to review the stories you tell yourself about your own darkness. Venus retrograde in Scorpio asks what you have been valuing that no longer serves your deepest truth. Together, they create a corridor of honest reckoning.

A Ritual Arc for the Season

Follow the mythological journey in four movements:

  1. Descent — Acknowledge what you have been avoiding. Name it plainly, even if your voice shakes.
  2. Shadow Encounter — Sit with what surfaces. No judgment. No fixing. Just witness.
  3. Integration — Find the gift inside the wound. What strength has your pain been guarding?
  4. Re-emergence — Carry the wisdom back into the light. You are not the same person who descended.

Three Ritual Anchors

  • New Moon journaling (November 9): Write with the question, "What am I ready to release?" Let the answer come without editing.
  • Samhain ancestor altar (October 31): During the retrograde window, set a place for those who came before you. Speak to them. Listen.
  • Taurus Full Moon threshold meditation (October 26): Ask your body what it is holding that your mind has not yet named.

Intentional adornment can serve as a ritual anchor during shadow work. Wearing a piece chosen with conscious intention acts as a talisman for the descent, something tangible to ground you when the inner terrain feels uncertain. The Threshold Collection, handcrafted by Marie Tengren-Knight in Santa Fe, NM, holds pieces like the Raw Amethyst Hoop Earrings in Copper, designed to be worn as sacred armor for the inward journey.

The Return: How to Emerge from the Sacred Dark

November 13. Mercury and Venus both station direct on the same day. This is the season's alchemical pivot, the moment Persephone begins her ascent, torchlit by Hecate.

But re-emergence is not escape. It is integration. You do not return from the underworld unchanged. The point was never to survive the dark. The point was to let the dark change you.

Name one truth you are carrying back with you. One piece of shadow that has become wisdom. One value clarified by the Venus Cazimi's fire. Hold it. It is yours now.

On November 16, Mars conjoins Jupiter in Leo, and the cosmos offers a surge of courage and momentum. This is the energy of the initiate who has faced the dark and chosen to return: not unscathed, but whole. Not untouched, but forged.

Scorpio Season does not ask you to be unafraid. It asks you to descend anyway. Torch in hand. Threshold crossed. Sacred and whole.
